GAPS · Romani Women Betting on a Dream

GAPS («Gitanas Apostando por un Sueño») worked in the educational and social spheres to improve the educational situation of the Romani community and reduce the stereotyped view that still exists of it. Its mission: that Romani women reach their educational goals and personal empowerment.

After an outreach phase in Álora, Almogía and Pizarra, three teachers gave classes twice a week, first in the library of the secondary school in Álora and later in Pizarra. Awareness activities included a tribute to the Romani victims of the Great Round-up of 1749 and an empowerment workshop on 25 November. The year ended with the Dosta awards ceremony at the Botanical Garden of Málaga.

Results

• More than 10 women trained twice a week
• 3 women sat exams: 2 for secondary education and 1 for higher vocational training
• More than 80 people at the Dosta awards ceremony
